In the Bio-optofluidics Engineering, Science, and Technology (BEST) Group, our focus is on designing and engineering integrated systems and platforms to explore pivotal topics in biotechnology. These include medical microbiology, energy harvesting, and food resources. Our approach leverages advanced techniques such as optofluidics/microfluidics, Raman microspectroscopy, optical tweezers, stable isotope probing (SIP), and system automation (including machine learning).
Two significant endeavors exemplify our work:
(i) We investigate the physiology of microorganisms, exploring their metabolisms, functions, and cellular interactions.
(ii) We are actively developing a platform capable of sorting microbial cells, particularly bacteria, based on their functional properties (see the illustration below). This system is pivotal for the targeted design of microbial consortia tailored for personalized prebiotics and probiotics.
